Apartments - sustainable

Are town centre apartments sustainable, they help if you work eat sleep and play in a central location , so I don't think that they have been an idea in Crewe , but i think that we have hit an over supply now. This is evidenced by several flats coming on to the market via the auction houses at bargain prices
My advice is don't get tempted yet as they will fall a lot more before they really are a bargain.

Sustainable?- I think so in a town like crewe, if you live here you can certainly walk to work, if you work in town.

...aye - *if* you work in Town. That puts the onus on living close to where you work though. Lets be honest, what sort of percentage can say that? They were decent sizes, and well designed like other areas/country's then it might be sustainable - but developers build them high, cram them in.

what an interesting take on all those new flats! i hadn't thought of this before.

living near where one works/shops/plays certainly cuts down on transport. but what if the flats have been built on a brownfield site (these sites are really useful for hard-pressed wildlife)? or what if the building materials were taken from an unsustainable source? are the flats' heating systems energy-efficient? are there any bike shelters/sheds to prevent people having to carry bikes up stairs and keep them in their flats?

i'm not saying that as sustainable building is tricky we shouldn't try, just that there's more to sustainability than might at first appear
