In last weeks chronicle Cllr Hogben is making a stance over car parking charges in Crewe.
I am in favour of car parking charges and any hike in car parking charges, as this is the only way available at the moment to deter cars causing congestion in Crewe.
What is the alternative Cllr? Some issues just should be political , cllrs should use common sense rather than political point scoring to make judgements.
We should also be charging on the motorways but thats another story.

In Crewe the car parking strategy is flawed - there should be less open space carparks and multistorys built instead (yes they *can* be aesthetically pleasing - visit Stratford-Upon-Avon). Then we'd be paying for something - as it is we dont get much for our parking ticket money.
Congestion in Crewe is *not* due to the number of cars, but the bottlenecks in the road network!
the car parking strategy is there is not one- and that is the problem- i know the car park that you mean in stratford, but they have different issues
You are right with the railways, we are a railway town and as a result we have bottle necks whre the roads go over the lines a victim of earlier succeses
I helped develop the grand junction retail park and the problem 10 years ago were the lines but and they still are , and Network rail would not talk about improvements about the bridges or help
The problem was no stratergy with central government, roads planning etc
It is now the time to provide some sustianable planning and thinking not short term fixes
We have had enough of those
Well if there isn't one, and you sound like your in the position to put one forward, then one is needed. As for Network Rail - is not a case of asking, its telling. The council were quick enough to hand out compulsory purchase orders to residence of Moathouse (now 'the Parks) when it was due for redevelopment.
So to summarise - if theres a problem that might be affecting the environment - tax people more so they wont do it? Petrol's over £1 a litre but I still drive my car which does 12mpg on a good day.
Unfortunaly Network rail are immune from CPO's so you cant tell them, they work under statue- The council did hand out CPO's for moat house and i fought all the way against them!
And yes those in big gas guzzlers should pay more tax on fuel!
and that includes me and mine does 8MPG!
Charging on motorways?
I already pay Road tax,fuel duty,v.a.t etc.
Why should I pay more?
If we built better roads ,instead of little more than upgrading cart-tracks,there wouldn't be a problem.
If everybody was sensible about driving and planned journesys a bit more then we wouldnt have to pay but eveybody puts themesleves first, and central government has failed to address issues over the last 30 years- so we need a solution that will help the road network , congestion safety and enviromental issues
It has been seen that building more roads just increases capacity
1. I would stagger work start times between 7 am and 10 am
2. Introduce a congestion charge
3. Reduce train and bus fares by grant aid
any thoughts??
And anyybody who can't afford the charges?
Do they become second rate citizens?
Because rest assured those that can afford the big, gas guzzling motors will pay without giving it a second thought.
It already happens, are there less 4wd's ,even after the tax hike? No, there are more than ever.
What you propose is unfair and will hit the less well off in society.
We all need to take responsibility for our own lives, and the I suggest that the public transport system is improved, not for the poorer but for the benifit of everybody.
If we increase charges those that choose to spend money on petrol CC and parking it is up to them. But the state does need to provide an equal public transport system for the benifit of all not just the poor or the rich , other wise that is reverse discrimination
We will always have a world of haves and have not and we all need to take responsibiliy- some will slip through the net and some need assitAnce- disabled get free parking and CC .
We dont all have housing is that fair?
No it's not,but you can't use car's as an excuse for facism.
If you can afford the chages then O.k. if not, tough,is that it?
A lot of people run a car because they need to get to work, not because they are lazy, and road charging and congestion charges in an area like cheshire will only stop the "have not's " as you put it from working.
Crewe hasn't the industry to provide all the job's it needs localy anymore..
Is that fair?
NO.
Bit of a daft argument saying that congestion charges are facism- I take the piont you are making but i believe that safety and the enviroment are more important that some issues- i dont really think its facism do you?
I lot of people cant afford the charges but a lot of people abuse the use of cars and yes they are lazy - less than 2% of the population use cycling as a mode of transport when some dutch towns it is as much as 65%
There is a lot of goverment policy that is in force to reduce travel by cars which have not filtered through yet and this is more than just CC
Crew does have a diversy base of industry but it ios always going to have peole needing the car but the goverment target is a reduction of 25% of car travel- that is not that dificult to achieve is it?
Or do you think we should keep building the roads and clogging up the cites
The last 10 years has brought about a new style of city centre living and the need for the car is less- and more sustainable and hopefully may bring a partial reduction in necessary car journeys
25% is all that is needed and that will reduce serious accidents by a higher propoation
